BIOGRAPHY
Charles Ewen
Head of EDE Customer Experience
Chas Ewen is Head of Customer Experience for the EDE (Electronics Design Engineering) Sector. This is a new role to Premier Farnell and is aimed at enhancing existing and developing new EDE centred services and functionality with an emphasis on the web. Whilst based in the UK his role is global and Chas makes heavy use of analytics and other web tools as well as frequent direct conversations with customers in the EDE Segment. Chas reports through the Marketing function but as a change agent works closely with all business functions to deliver a world class customer experience. Chas is working to increase the pace of change within Premier Farnell and to deliver innovative, differentiating and value adding services to the EDE space.
Chas has been with the group for over 10 years in a variety of customer facing and eCommerce roles, most recently as Head of eCommerce for the Europe and Asia Pacific regions where he worked with the businesses to deliver a web site growing at over 40% per annum for 5 consecutive years.
Before joining the Group, Charles worked as an Electronics Engineer at Racal (now part of the Thales group) and worked on computer based systems. Prior to a career at Racal, Chas worked as an Engineer in the Royal Air Force and British Airways on computer based aircraft health monitoring systems.
Marco Ryan
Group eCommerce Director
Marco is the Senior Vice President Group eCommerce – accountable for the Groups eCommerce strategy, the optimization of the eCommerce channel, the evolution of all functionality and the delivery of the Web sales and margin globally. He also drive the company internal eLIFE programme – a change programme ensuring that as the web becomes the group’s dominant channel to market, the company has adopted leading technologies, ways of working and processes to ensure that we can deliver the best service and solutions to our customers and suppliers.
Marco has nearly 20 years eCommerce strategy and operational experience. He has a proven track record for innovation and thought leadership from the very beginning of the internet with early research work in the late 1980s with the US Department of Defence on Arpanet and Virtual reality modeling that led to several award winning deployment of web based systems to NATO. In the early 1990s Marco sold the web based eCommerce pilot, “DeskshopTM” , to a top 5 consultancy that subsequently led to a leading online retailer’s eCommerce application within Europe. From 1999 to 2001, as COO of icollector – a listed online auction company that pre-dates eBay – Marco helped to grow the company to the world leading B2B online auction company and its subsequent sale. Part of that success was due to one of the very first deployments of Teamsite in Europe. From 2001-2006 Prior to joining Premier Farnell, Marco worked for Cap Gemini Ernst and Young, as member of the Senior leadership team focused on delivering global eCommerce and CRM strategies to fortune 500 and FTSE 100 companies.
Marco is a visiting lecturer on eCommerce an Innovation at Lancaster University Business School, a regular conference speaker on the impact of Web, Web2.0 and is currently co-authoring a book on the” Disrupted Enterprise”.
Marianne Culver
Group Director/Senior Vice President, Global Supplier Management
Premier Farnell Plc
As Group Director/Senior Vice President for Global Supplier Management at Premier Farnell, Marianne Culver is primarily responsible for strategic leadership of the global electronics supplier linecard for Premier Farnell. Marianne is based in London and reports to Group Chief Operating Officer, Laurence Bain.
Marianne’s remit also includes management of the global supplier accounts team (“G12 suppliers”) and leading the global supplier communication strategy for the Group, predominantly Farnell InOne in Europe/Asia PAC and Newark InOne in the US. It also falls within Culver’s remit to work with the operational leaders globally to assist the group in developing a best in class product offering and excellent value proposition for customers, and to secure new target franchises to the group.
Prior to joining Premier Farnell in July 2004, Marianne was a member of the European senior management team at Avnet Inc, which she joined in 1999 when Avnet acquired UK-based SEI Macro Group, and where she was Group Managing Director.
Marianne’s initial role at Avnet was to oversee the commercial integration of the Avnet EM and SEI Macro Group sales operations in the UK, Ireland and Eastern Europe. In parallel, she oversaw the transition of the SEI Macro Group’s specialist PC channel, ‘Flashpoint’, into Avnet’s Applied Computing Components (ACC) Division. As a member of Avnet’s Integration Steering Committee for Europe, Marianne was also actively involved in, and instrumental to the completion of the merger of Avnet EM, SEI and the SEI Macro Group into one single European organisation. She went on to hold the position of Senior Vice President of Product Marketing for Avnet EM EMEA, before becoming President of Silica Europe, a division of Avnet, based in Paris, France. In 2001 Marianne was awarded Avnet’s Chairman’s award and elected a Corporate Vice President of the corporation.
Marianne joined the electronic components industry in January 1987, taking her first role in field sales for UK-based volume semiconductor distributor Macro Marketing Limited, and subsequently progressing through the company in a number of customer and supplier-facing roles until her appointment as Managing Director in April 1994. She is a graduate of St. Andrews University, Scotland, with a master’s degree in French and German.
Jamie Furness
Global Technology Development Manager
Jamie is the Global Technology Development Manager at Premier Farnell. Working as part of the Technical Marketing group, and reporting to David Shen, Group Head of Technical Marketing, Jamie focuses on identifying ways of attracting new Electronic Design Engineer customers to the company, primarily by identifying new and emerging technologies and then, working with the different regional product teams, further identifying the key suppliers to support these technologies. Putting the right products into stock is the first part of the process, the second is the communication to the customer using our innovative tools and multi-channel marketing. This involves managing and coordinating the content for Field Sales Training, our informational portal for design engineers (www.electronicsdesignworld.com) and all related technical marketing material such as PR and e-newsletters.
Since joining the company in March 2005, Jamie has developed EDWorld to be more attractive to design engineers offering new tools and design aids. He also created the Technology First concept and has project managed this campaign into a quarterly deliverable, touching over 500,000 engineers utilising Premier Farnell’s unique multi-channel capability.
Prior to joining Premier Farnell Jamie was the UK Business Development Director at Avnet subsidiary, Silica. There he managed a team of technically focused Sales Executives together with a team of Field Application Engineers, responsible for both OEM Sales as well as Design Registration and Tracking.
Jamie has now worked specifically in the Electronic Component Distribution industry for 14 years; Prior to Avnet, Jamie worked himself as a Field Application Engineer for Tyco Electronics, formally AMP, and before that as a Technical Field Sales Manager for Future Electronics. He completed his Engineering degree with honours at the University of Salford whilst serving in the Royal Navy, where he was both a Pilot and Engineering Officer. He has since completed various other management and sales courses including study at Cambridge and has recently commenced an Executive MBA at Leeds University.

John Straw
John Straw has 30 years commercial experience in the advertising and IT sectors. A serial entrepreneur, his past 12 years have been spent in the Internet sector:
- Interse Corporation, San Francisco, VP European Operations. Interse specialised in software products that measured a users path through a web site and was significantly ahead of its time. Interse was purchased by Microsoft in 1997
- Revnet Systems, Huntsville, Alabama, VP Marketing. Revnet product email management software for marketeers. The company was purchased by MessageMedia in 2000 (subsequently bought by Doubleclick and then Google)
John then went onto found Netrank Ltd in late 2000. Netrank is an internet marketing consultancy that specialises in search engines – especially Google. Through Netrank, John has consulted for Audi, Hertz, Rolls Royce, RBS, Fiat/Alfa, Cisco and forty other blue chip brands. UKRD plc acquired Netrank in January 2007.
John serves on Flemings Corporate Directors Advisory Panel.
John regularly speaks about the effect the Internet (and especially Google) will have on existing and future business models.

Andrew Lock
eBusiness Manager, EMEA
Andrew Lock is eBusiness Manager, 3M EMEA, based out of the UK headquarters in Bracknell. In this role, Andrew is responsible for leading the development of core strategies and capabilities across CRM, eBusiness/eCommerce and eMarketing. Fundamental to this is the development of CRM driven partner support programmes and joint eCommerce initiatives. Andrew has worked for 3M for 12 years across a number of disciplines including sales, marketing, product management, channel development and marketing communications. In his most recent assignment, Andrew was responsible for establishing the eChannel organisation within 3M UK leading to a more integrated approach to CRM and eBusiness. He has also held marketing communications management roles for Xerox UK Ltd. and Synopsys ( Europe), a leading software vendor in the electronics industry. Andrew has an MSc (Hons) in Business Administration and is currently half way through an MSc in Strategic Marketing Management with Henley Business School.
Leo McHugh
Product Line Director
Leo McHugh has worked in the semiconductor business for 15 years in various engineering and marketing roles with Analog Devices, the market share leader in converters and precision amplifiers. Currently, Product Line Director for the A/D precision converter business in Analog Devices as well as leading the Industrial and Instrumentation market segment team across the company.
Leo holds an electronic engineering degree from Dublin Institute of Technology, have an MBA (1 st class hons) from University of Limerick and an LLB Law degree (1 st class hons) from the College of Law London. He is married with 4 children, living in Limerick Ireland.
Paul Campbell
Marketing Communications Manager
Paul Campbell has been marketing communications manager for Murata Power Solutions (formerly C&D Technologies Power Electronics Division) since October 2002, handling all aspects of marcoms from advertising through collateral to e-media. For eight years prior to joining the company he acted as an external supplier to both C&D Technologies and Newport Components Ltd. (acquired by C&D in 2000).
In 1995 he was a founding partner of WPB Creative Ltd., a London based communications agency specialising in corporate communications and change management with clients including PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Diageo, Guinness, UDV, Oracle, Woolwich plc, UK Government, L’Oreal and Direct Line.
Alan Hutton
Partnership Marketing Manager, Europe
Alan Hutton is the Partnership Marketing Manager for National Semiconductor, Europe. He joined National in 1999 after devoting more than a dozen years to semiconductor product marketing, engineering management and program management at Motorola SPS (now Freescale) and Infineon. Alan received both his B.Eng. (Hons) and M.Sc. from the University of Glasgow in 1987 and 1989 respectively. Alan has been working in his current role since 2006 and is the author of numerous articles including reviews of various 8, 16 and 32-bit embedded microcontroller architectures, the AnalogMicrocontroller, pure-play high performance Analog, high speed LVDS & Ethernet interfaces and numerous Partnership Marketing approaches both in the channel and with direct attach programs leveraging complementary silicon suppliers.

Tony Astley is EMEA Business Operations Director for the region’s Sales and Applications organization and is responsible for all sales support functions. He has held this position for three years.
Tony joined the Field Sales team of TI in 1984, based in Bedford in the UK. During 14 years spent in the UK, Tony held various sales and sales management roles, including market segment management for the UK military and automotive businesses and major European account management. In 1998 he relocated to Freising, Germany to lead TI’s activities in the areas of Marketing Operations, including Internet and eMarketing, distribution, customer service and TI’s European Product Information Center. He also played a major role in the integration of Burr Brown, a company acquired by TI in 2000. In 2001, Tony was appointed EMEA director of regional sales.
Frederick Decock
eBusiness Manager
Fred DeCock is Manager, eBusiness with Tyco Electronics, the world’s largest manufacturer of passive electro-mechanical components. His career with Tyco Electronics spans 27 years with a broad range of responsibilities including sales, marketing, product management, corporate communications and thirteen years of web system design, development and implementation experience.
Fred is currently an integral part of the corporate team responsible for managing, supporting, and selecting enabling technologies that support multiple business units around the world. The Tyco Electronics eCatalog and eCommerce systems are highly regarded in the electronics industry as powerful tools that provide customers and employees access to current product and business information on hundreds of thousands of products. The corporation’s global focus on eBusiness efforts presents constant challenges for Fred’s team.
He has Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Penn State, with a minor in Economics. Fred enjoys an occasional round of golf, coaches youth sports teams and is very active in his family’s church and Scouting activities.
Frank Marx
Chief Sales & Marketing Officer
Frank Marx, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer at Zetex Semiconductor plc and is a member of the operating board of the company. Joining Zetex in 2004, Frank’s responsibility include heading up global business development, implementing the infrastructure with sales offices worldwide and strengthening the network of business partners including distributors. He’s also handling all Marketing communication activities including the online appearance on the intranet. Frank has authored several technical articles for power semiconductors in the press and has been instrumental in setting up partnership relations between Zetex and technology leading companies within the Lighting, DBS and Audio sector.
With a degree in Industrial Engineering from Munich University and about 2 decades of management experience in Sales and Marketing gained with leading semiconductor manufacturers including SGS-Thomson Microelectronics and National Semiconductor, Frank joined Zetex from Fairchild Semiconductor where he served as Director of Worldwide Marketing.
